Okonite announces layoff

The Okonite company today announced a reduction in their workforce at their Richmond, Kentucky plant. The reductions will be 3 positions in the CV department and 1 position in the Stranding department.

We already have 2 people on layoff since April do to slow business conditions.

The company indicated that they did not know how long the layoff would last. Business has been slow for the last few months, and they have avoided a layoff up to now by not been replacing union members that have retired or quit.

Okonite returns sign

The company's personnel manager returned the Local Union's sign "Stand Up, Figt Back" this week. There was no apology or explanation for their removal of the sign from the Local Union's display case which was removed a few days after we signed a new 5 year negotiated contract .

The sign had been in the case for the last 2-3 years. Our Local Union file an unfair labor practice charge against the company concerning the sign removal.

New Contract Books

We finally got a copy of the new contract books of the newly negotiated contract.

After repeated attempts by the Local Union to point out the mistakes of the draft copies, the final printed copies unfortunately has several mistakes in it.

The company has not indicated what their plans are to fix the copies.

Meeting Canceled

The IBEW Int'l had a desire for our Local Union, IBEW Int'l and Okonite to sit down and try to work on a better relationship between our Local and the Richmond/Corporate management. This ideal first surfaced after the contract negoitations last winter. Since that time the IBEW Int'l had tried to work out a schedule for the meeting.

Finally the company said that they had no desire to meet with us.

So for now there will be no meeting.

Attention all Members:

Check your Checks

Please check your pay checks to make sure that you have received your correct pay raise(s). There have been reports that Okonite has not added our latest pay raise/adders to our pay that was negotiated in the recent contract negotiations.

Article 19 of new contract agreement:

Cable Machine Operators, Shielding Operator and Q C Inspector, Hvy., classifications will be upgraded from job level 6 to job level 8.

Strand Machine Operator classification will be upgraded from job level 10 to job level 11.

If you find that you have not been paid correctly, please ask for a Union Steward and file a grievance promptly.

Stand Up, Fight Back

A little over 2 years ago, then Kentucky Governor Ernie Fletcher, proposed that Kentucky become a right to work state. Many of our Union brothers and sisters from across the Commonwealth joined forces in a rally at Frankfort to lobby the members of our state legislature to stop Governor Fletcher's attack on working men and women and their families. Through those efforts, the Kentucky legislature stood up to the Governor and defeated his proposal.

The signs that was carried the day of the rally was the like the one pictured above, "Stand Up, Fight Back". Our Local Union officials attended that rally and brought back one of those signs and posted it in our Union bulletin board display case.

Three days after the recent contract was signed with Okonite, Okonite's Personnel Director Steve Woltering, came out and unlocked our bulletin board display case and removed our "Stand Up, Fight Back" sign and threw it in the trash.

Union Leave Denied

Since the signing of the new contract with Okonite, our Local Union has asked for a couple of the Local Union Officials to be off on unpaid leave to attend to some Union business. Our Union made two separate requests which was immediately denied.

Finally, the company has agreed to allow the Local officials off this coming Friday to take care of business activities.

Transfers

The Unions wants to remind all members that when they are transferred to a different job, they should always ask for a transfer sheet. This will insure your +.45 adder. Also, if there is no transfer sheet filled out, then you don't have anything to prove that you are entitled to the adder pay. We know that management people go back and change your timesheets from time to time.

If the foreman refuses to give you a written transfer, which is clearly stated in the CBA, please ask for a Union steward and file a grievance.

Breaks

All members are encouraged take their designated breaks at their designated times. All members should be provided relief from their lines for their breaks. Ask your foreman for this relief.

Consider this:

if just 25 Union members did not ask for relief for their breaks daily for one year, that would add up to $39,000 per year.
